What does an artist in matchmoves do?

In order to successfully blend live-action and computer-generated (CG) scenes, matchmove artists pair live-action and CG scenes with certain shots.

 

On a computer, they reproduce real-world backgrounds (plates) in a way that perfectly replicates the camera used on set, down to lens distortion. To ensure that the real and virtual scenes are seen from the same perspective, they accomplish this by tracking the camera movements.

 

Matchmove creators occasionally visit the filming location to obtain measurements and place tracking markers. Following that, they determine the pertinent coordinates in the 3D scene by using these markers to follow the camera movement. Programs for 3D tracking, such as Maya or 3DEqualizer, are used in this process.

 

By employing markers to simulate the motions of humans, cars, and other items in computer graphics, matchmove artists can also perform body and object tracking. The resulting motion files (camera, object, or body track) are then distributed to other departments via the VFX pipeline so that the compositor can eventually integrate them without any noticeable gaps.

 

The work of matchmove artists is extremely accurate and meticulous. They need to have an eye for detail because it must be pixel precise. They need to figure out how to correct any alignment issues between the live-action and CG movements.

 

What skills does a matchmove artist have?

Understand camera motion in virtual 3D space and learn how to precisely model it to recreate a scene using math and physics.
